Background
Though Ken Uston did not really invent team play in blackjack, he is still widely credited for making the technique popular which later helped other blackjack teams earn millions of dollars: his book The Big Player perfectly described the principles of blackjack team play and it made Ken to become very popular. Do not also about his book Million Dollar Blackjack which was not worse than The Big Player and somewhere even better.
Ken Uston was born in the year 1935 to a Japanese father and an Austrian mother. He had always been a very gifted child, he was admitted to the Yale University when he was just 16 and graduated with the highest honors. Later, he completed his masters in business administration from Harvard. He had been moving up the corporate ladder by the age of 31 and was the Senior Vice President of a stock exchange, making $50,000 a year. However, there was something still missing for him. He decided to quit his high paying career and become a professional player for blackjack.
Over the years that he played as a professional blackjack player, Ken Uston was banned from a large number of casinos all over the world. His skills were noticed everywhere and the casinos definitely felt threatened by his presence. The casinos in Las Vegas were especially hit hard by all of his techniques. Even the professional gamblers took notice of him, including Al Francesco. They had met at a poker game and Francesco had invited Uston to join his team. Al Francesco had just established the big player concept in card counting teams and he had been looking for skilled players to join his team. Though they both did not work together for very long, it was the concept of Big Player that the book was written about.
The Big Player
In card counting strategies the concept of the Big Player had been introduced by Al Francesco with whom he had worked for a while. The book The Big Player had been published in the 70s by Ken Uston and with it he became the first person to ever reveal the tactics of the big player mechanism to the world. The Big Player was based on Ken Uston's experience working as the big player in one of Al Francesco's teams.
Once the book had been published and the secret was known to the world, the team had been banned by most casinos in Las Vegas. For the remaining years of his career, he had been forced to continue forming new teams and make use of different disguises and techniques in order to keep playing blackjack at the casinos.
In the 70s and the 80s, Ken Uston was definitely considered as the King of Blackjack. The book talks about his own personal story and many of his adventures when he got recruited in a team of blackjack which made use of card counting strategies to beat the casinos. The book is not really a guide on card counting systems. However, it does enlist a lot many amusing stories about Uston playing against the casinos and the difficulties that card counters have to face every day. It had been a never ending battle for him and in the process he had got barred from dozens of casinos forcing him to use disguises and new techniques.
